On our last full day in Dubrovnik we used our Dubrovnik Card to take a bus ride to the nearby town of Cavtat.  This is a favourite destination of many tourists and we found a group from the cruise ship The Black Watch.

Cavtat has two harbours connected by a peninsular, we walked from one to the other around the coast.

We went into the Church of St. Nicholas on our walk around the peninsular. The church was built way back in the 15th century.

There was a second church on the walk - the Church and Monastery of the Lady of the Snow. The legend says that one rich Roman patrician, who was very pious, had no children or family to leave his inheritance to. Together with his wife, he made a vow to leave all his earthly belongings to the Virgin Mary and prayed for Mary to guide him as to the concrete purpose on which he should spend the money. The Blessed Virgin answered his prayer and on August 5th, when Rome usually experiences a severe heat wave, the snow fell on the top of the Esquiline Hill. The same night, then Pope Liberius dreamt about the snow on the same hill. That’s why when the patrician came to him with the intention to build the church on the hill, the Pope acknowledged it as a sign from the Virgin herself.

If you’re wondering what’s that legend got to do with Cavtat, the answer is that similar story happened there. Not the snow on a hill but a rich citizen who had no family to leave his inheritance to so he decided to build a church dedicated to Our Lady of the Snow.

Any time is a good time for an ice cream

We took the bus back to Dubrovnik and spent the rest of the afternoon back in the old city.  Our final piece of sight seeing was the Church of St Ignatius of Loyola, the construction of the church was completed in 1725.

On the Dalmatian coast fish was always on the menu.

Why this photograph?

We have never been to a place where there were so many ATM's. They were everywhere.

We returned to the apartment to collect our bags, took a taxi to the bus station and caught a bus to the airport.  We were staying near by.  Our host picked us up and took us to our last VRBO apartment.  This was another great place to stay and the host family was very kind and helpful even giving us a welcoming drink.  They drove us to a nearby restaurant, collected us and gave us a bottle of Dalmatian Merlot as a present.  They also took us to the airport the next morning where we caught an early Air Croatia flight to Frankfurt, connected with Lufthansa and we were into Vancouver in the early afternoon.  Not a good connection there but we were home by late evening after an excellent trip.
