DAY 9 - AROUND ZAGREB

We spent the day talking in more of Zagreb.  The city isn't too large and walking is easy.  We started out at the Dolac Market in the upper town close by the Cathedral.  It was all hustle and bustle with a multitude of market stalls.

We moved down to the Ban Jelacic Square. Ban Jelacic was a 19th century governor who led his Croatian troops into an unsuccessful battle with Hungary in the hope of winning more autonomy for his people.

The upper old town is linked by the Gric tunnel to the lower town near the second market. The tunnel consists of a central hall, which is connected by two passageways to the west and the east and four passageways extending to the south. It was built during World War II by the government to serve both as a bomb shelter and a promenade, but following the war it quickly fell into disrepair and disuse. The tunnel saw renewed use only in the 1990s, hosting one of the first raves! in Croatia, and functioning as a shelter during the Croatian War of Independence, which wasn't that long ago.  In 2016, the tunnel was remodeled and opened to the public, serving as a tourist attraction and hosting cultural events.

One tunnel entrance - quite hard to find
